On this 5 days Congo gorilla safari in Virunga National Park & Nyiragongo Volcano Hike tour,you will discover the wildlife of Virunga, the oldest and most biologically diverse national park in Africa. The park is home to mountain gorillas and many endangered animals such as okapi, chimpanzee, elephants and bird life. You hope to see gorillas with a guided gorilla trekking through the park. Interact with your Virunga guide and ask questions about wildlife. After tracking gorillas, you will head further south of Virunga to climb Mount Nyiragongo, the most active volcano on the African continent. The starting and ending place is Kigali city.
Detailed itinerary for 5 days Congo gorilla safari in Virunga National park & Nyiragongo Volcano Hike tour
Day 1: Kigali to Virunga national park
You will start the tour with a scenic drive from Kigali to Goma city where you will have lunch. After you proceed to Virunga national park, check in for dinner and overnight at Mikeno lodge/ Bukima tented camp
Day 2: gorilla tracking
After breakfast, you will head to the trailhead and attend briefing on gorilla rules. There are always few tourists in this park. You then hike through beautiful part of Virunga with your Virunga guide in search for gorillas. This area has much thick vegetation, expect it to be challenging trek before you encounter the gorillas. But you will be able to see gorillas for 1 hour and enjoy taking their photos. Return back to the lodge for relaxation and dinner.
Day 3: Nyiragongo hiking
After breakfast, Mount Nyiragongo climbing excursion will begin at Kibati ranger station. Here you will meet your guide and prepare all the gears you require and hire a porter or cook to escort up the volcano. It will take about 6 hours to reach the summit and overnight will spent right there. At night, you will walk along the crater rim observing the active lava lake looking like a pit of fire.
Day 4: descend and transfer to Lake Kivu
Descend back to kibati post and on arrival transfer to Lake Kivu. Today we keep it easy for relaxing on the beaches, swim and take a boat cruise to explore islands and spot birds.
Day 5: return back to Kigali
After breakfast, pack your staff and transfer back to Kigali. Depending on what you want to do next, you will be dropped off at your favorite place.
